Let’s Get Kids Outside and Riding

The Youth Communities Access Summer Ride Camp is an all-day, full-week summer camp in Folsom that empowers youth to discover how bicycles are a tool for physical health, mental health, and an instrument to connect with nature and their community.

Kids spend the week riding trails, learning new skills, and exploring the outdoors through this special youth access program. Each camper receives a bike and gear to keep. Camp cost is just $25. No riding experience required.

Camp Details

  • One-week summer day camp

Summer Ride Camp Schedule

Camps are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm (note: June 29-July 2 is Monday-Thursday due to July 4th holiday). All camps run from Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Folsom.

  • June 15–19: 2nd–3rd Grade
  • June 22–26: 4th–5th Grade
  • June 29–July 2: 6th–8th Grade
  • July 6–10: 2nd–3rd Grade
  • July 13–17: 4th–5th Grade
  • July 20–24: 6th–8th Grade

Who can apply?

The program is funded by a grant from the California Natural Resources Agency with very specific guidelines as to who is eligible to participate. To qualify, a child must meet two separate criteria at the same time: The household must be low-income, and the child must be part of what the grant calls a disadvantaged community (defined as part of a community of color or part of a vulnerable population).

  • Who is eligible to apply for camp?

  • Do I register my child based on their current grade or their grade in the fall?

    Register based on the grade they will enter in the fall.

  • When will I found out if my child is accepted?

    Applications are open until camps are full. Families will be notified of acceptance as soon as possible.

  • What if I need to switch weeks?

    Switching weeks will be permitted if space allows.

  • My child doesn’t have a bike.

    All campers will be given a bike, helmet, lock, and tools to keep if they complete the camp.

  • Can my child bring his/her own bike to camp?

    For safety reasons, we ask that participants use the camp-provided bike. If special accommodations are needed, please email us at community@clippedinforlife.org.

  • What if my child doesn't know how to ride a bike?

    We will teach them how to pedal a bike first!

  • If I can't transport the bike, can my rider keep their bike at camp?

    All bikes will be stored at camp during your camp week, so there is no need to transport the bike to and from camp. Participants will be able to take their bike home at the end of the week.

  • My child can’t attend every day of the camp.

    Please email us at community@clippedinforlife.org to let us know if your child is not able to attend a day of camp.

    If you miss the first day of camp without communicating with us, your spot will be given away to the next child on the waitlist.

  • What should my child bring to camp each day?

    Please wear or carry the following items on your bike:

    • Summer Ride Camp t-shirt (to be distributed on first day)
    • Closed-toe/athletic shoes for riding
    • A small backpack to carry water, snacks, and sunscreen during rides
    • Sunscreen
    • Any necessary medication (i.e. inhaler or epi pen)

    Please pack the following items in a separate backpack, to be transported by our SAG vehicle:

    • Extra sunscreen
    • Swimsuit
    • Towel

    Please label your child’s belongings with their first & last name!

    Lunch and snacks will be provided.

  • Will lunch be provided, and what if my child has food allergies?

    Lunch and snacks are provided! If your child is accepted into the program, there will be an opportunity to include food allergies on the registration form.

  • What safety precautions will be taken to ensure my child’s safety?

    Each rider will be provided with a bike in new condition and equipped with a properly fitting helmet. We will perform a thorough rider evaluation at the beginning of the week to ensure that riders are similar skill levels are grouped together.

    Riders will be grouped together for rides based on skill level. Our team will perform a thorough evaluation of skill at the beginning of the week. We will always maintain a 1:5 coach to rider ratio in groups.

    Participants will receive instruction on riding skills and traffic safety during camp week. They do not need to be educated on this ahead of time – we will meet them where they’re at.

    Participants will have access to snacks and water at all times. A SAG (Support-and-Gear) vehicle will always be available to help with mechanical issues and/or transportation back to Mt. Olive Church if needed. On heat alert days, we will engage in alternative activities, indoors if necessary.

  • Are you accepting parent and/or sibling volunteers?

    We are not currently accepting parent and/or sibling volunteers.

About the Program

Summer Ride Camp expands access to cycling for youth who have historically had fewer opportunities to participate in outdoor recreation. Families will be asked to provide basic household information as part of the application process.

Funding for the Youth Communities Access Grant Program is provided by the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act (Proposition 64).
